Carol Vorderman’s brilliant response after Kelvin MacKenzie rips into her and ‘Welsh success’

The former editor of the Sun Editor implied there was “something in Welsh water which destroys success” as he tore into Vorderman’s career – mistakenly believing she’d moved back to Wales

Carole Vorderman has clapped back at a former editor of The Sun newspaper after he ripped into her career. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Kelvin MacKenzie, who was editor of the tabloid from 1981 and 1994, reeled off the highlights of Vorderman’s time in the spotlight, such as her fixture on Countdown.

But he then implied her success had slumped since – as he mistakenly believed – she had moved back to Wales, sarcastically blaming it on “something in Welsh water”. Mackenzie, 76, wrote on Sunday: “Carole (sic) Vorderman had it all. A £4million flat overlooking Parliament, a daily TV show and a guest at Tory gatherings.

“Then she moved back to Wales. Today she works for BBClocal and supports Labour. Is there something in Welsh water which destroys success? We should be told.” Broadcaster Carol, 62, hit back: “Keeelvin! I don’t have an ‘e’ in Carol, I don’t live in Wales, I don’t support Labour or any political party.” She added: “Pathetic trolling by former editor of The Sun @kelvinmackenzie,” as she added a laughing emoji.

Thousands of followers rushed to share Carol’s tweet and respond with one saying: “@kelvmackenzie you’ve been owned boyo.” A second said: “And that put him back in his kennel,” with a laughing emoji. Another scoffed: “Kelvin MacKenzie not doing his research before rushing out his tweet eh…now there’s a surprise,” with rolling eye emojis. And another added: “@kelvmackenzie wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped him in the face.”

Carol grew up in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, but today lives in the affluent Clifton area of Bristol. She regularly returns to her home country, including an annual trip to Angelsey, staying in a beachside retreat that she has dubbed  her ” favourite house in the world”
